Forbidden love is the nature of Alpha and Omega . Kate (Panettiere) and Humphrey (Long) are two wolves from the same pack but on opposite ends of the social order. While Kate is an alpha and the daughter of the main alpha male Winston (Glover), Humphrey is an omega wolf, fun loving and spends his days joking and mucking around with his friends. But, just like in Romeo and Juliet , although separated by social order and rivalry, love is never far away.
Although the plot of the movie is predictable, two individuals with very different lifestyles coming together to overcome some complication in their everyday life, in this case being transported to another park to “repopulate”, eventually falling in love and finding their way back home, there is still plenty to enjoy for both a younger audience and those adults that love a combination of animals falling in love, comedy and one-liners that will leave you with a smile. Comedy is a high priority on the agenda for this film. Scenes of caribou bottoms wiggling and the line, “now that’s a moon I don’t want to howl to”, a howl that is enough to pull bark from a tree or in this case cause birds to fall from the sky in distress and two organic preaching wolves are some of many moments that will have you giggling out loud.
Justin Long has the perfect voice for animated movies and when taking on the character of Humphrey is able to deliver his lines with a comical nature, a lovable flow and actually has a viewer debating over wanting to cuddle the carnivorous creature. His voice is firm, easy on the ears and very enjoyable to hear portray the playful creature. Likewise, Glover is also tremendous in his delivery, but not for being so simplistic and easy to listen to, but for the manor in which he can be much more serious, determined and aggressive in his approach. For both of these characters and the wolf voiced by Panettiere, there is an instant connection between voice and character personality, which is remarkable.
Alpha and Omega was originally released in cinemas as a 3D animation, however from the look of this 2D version, there are some scenes created to levitate from the screen, which does not come across as well in 2D. Having said that, the animation remains brilliant, sharp, colourful, finely detailed and no matter the appearance, will be adored by all.
