Review by Dave Smith

A new decade means new rules

10 years on from the Woodsboro killings, Sidney Prescott (Campbell) returns home to promote her new book, “Out of Darkness”, about surviving the earlier killings, but soon is fighting for her life yet again.

Ghostface has returned yet again -and the body count quickly begins to rise. Former investigative reporter Gail Weathers (Cox) is re-invigorated at the prospect of unmasking yet another killer, while her now sheriff husband Dewey (Arquette) bungles his way through the bloodbath in his typical Deputy Dewey manner. Meanwhile, the students of Woodsboro High School, including Sidney’s younger cousin Jill (Roberts) laugh the whole thing off as they constantly webcast, text, and tweet every detail.

There are the usual suspects – a suspicious ex-boyfriend, overly friendly police and of course the film geeks that live blog everything and host the annual Stab (Stab being the film in the Scream trilogy based on the Woodsboro killings) film marathon.

As with the rest of the series, barely a scene passes without the characters referencing movie conventions. But it does so in an intelligent way, and most importantly makes fun of itself.

Scream 4 is not as tongue in cheek as Scream 3, with plenty of jump-in-your-seat moments, the scenes involving the stabbings are a lot more graphic and longer than the other movies in the series.

Bringing back a Scream film after all these years may have seemed a risk, but if you enjoyed the Scream trilogy, you’re very likely to enjoy this one, Scream 4 is a refreshing change to the ‘torture porn’ route many films in this genre have taken, and may even be one of the better films released this year.
