Review by Michelle Moore
Girls across the globe first fell head over heels for Taylor Lautner when he portrayed Jacob in the hit Twilight Saga films. Now he is back with shorter hair, more charm and enough action to send thrills through anyone’s soul.
The story revolves around a teenager called Nathan Harper (Lautner). After seeing his childhood photo on a missing children’s website, he confronts his parents about who he really is. However, before he can find out any information, a secret agency blasts in, killing his parents and sending Nathan and his neighbour/love interest Karen Lowell (Collins) fleeing for their lives. At this moment, Nathan has no idea who he really is and whether the people he is closest to are who they say they are. Counsellor Dr. Bennett (Weaver) for example is an ex-CIA operative and not actually a psychiatrist. With both the CIA and a foreign agency hot on their heels, Nathan and Karen must find a way to survive as well as uncover the truth about Nathan’s background.
Taylor Lautner is a remarkable actor. Although his talents shone brightly in the Twilight films, his character was always over shadowed by that of Edward (Robert Pattinson). Abduction has given him the opportunity to show exactly what he is capable of and he is outstanding. He shows his romantic side with fellow actor Lily Collins, his anger when lashing out and defending himself in the fight scenes and a plethora of emotions when his parents are killed, as well as his yearning to find out about his past and his real father.
Although the majority of young girls will likely be heading out to the cinema to watch Abduction for one reason only (must his name be said again?), there are so many other reasons why this film will appeal to a much wider audience. The story is novel, rather than something that has been repeated and worn out many times before and you can really feel for the characters involved and see their desperation in the situation. There is also plenty of action in this movie, which includes a house being blow to shards and victims landing in a pool, people sliding down banisters in a stadium, a man being tackled on a train and enough gunfire and car chases to fill the cinema. All of which go towards making it one of the most exciting, exhilarating and exhausting action movies of the year.
