Celebrating Cinematic Works of Emerging Film Artists: Featuring ‘Mayor for Life’ with Marion Barry and more

 

Washington, DC – The 2011 Reel Independent Film Extravaganza (2011 RIFE) will take place this weekend October 22 & 23 at THEARC Theater, 1901 Mississippi Ave, Washington, DC 20020. The 2011 RIFE will feature four (4) World Premieres, ‘Mayor for Life’ featuring Marion Barry and ‘Sons of Life’ featuring Tony Lewis, Jr. as the Closing Films, introduction of the DMV Reel Awards, Tyler Perry’s ‘House of Payne’ *Actress Denyce Lawton hosts the Awards Finale and more.

 

The Reel Independent Film Extravaganza is a weekend celebration of emerging filmmakers, independent films and entertainment industry professionals. Attendees will view an array of independent films from various genres and locations such as DMV (DC|MD|VA), USA, Italy, Poland, Russia, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Sunday, October 23, 2011 will feature a DMV Showcase which will give the hometown audience hometown films.

There are several World Premieres taking place Saturday and Sunday. ‘All in the Game’ and ‘Coffin’ will premiere Saturday, October 22 at 7:00pm. ‘All in the Game’ is an urban drama featuring actors who starred in HBO’s The Wire series and was filmed in Baltimore. ‘Coffin’ is a psychological thriller starring actors Kevin Sorbo (Hercules), Bruce Davidson (X-Men), Johnny Alonso, Patrick Barnett and Sunny Doench. ‘End of Occupation’ is a series of short films and premieres Sunday, October 23 at 4:00pm.

 

The 2011 RIFE Awards Finale hosted by Actress Denyce Lawton will take place Sunday, October 23 and the red carpet begins at 6:00pm. Awards such as Best Documentary, Best Short, Best Feature and others will be distributed for amazing film works. Awards Presenters include new super group Lipstick & Congas, Comedian Lazee Lamont, Hostess Cherie Moody, Personality Marcellus “Bassman” Shepard, Miss International 2011 Ciji Dodds, Miss Maryland International 2012 Chardia Murray and more. Saturday’s extravaganza will be hosted by Cherie Moody and Marcellus “Bassman” Shepard.

2011 RIFE is “More than a festival – is an event created BY filmmakers FOR filmmakers and beyond.” Founder of the Reel Independent Film Extravaganza Spencer F. Johnson is pleased to announce the DMV Reel Awards. RIFE will honor former DC Mayor and current Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry with the 2011 DMV Reel ICON Award, BET’s American Gangster, ESPN’s 30 for 30, BET’s Lil Kim: Countdown til Lockdown Filmmaker Kirk Fraser with the 2011 DMV Reel Filmmaker Award and Hoodie Award Winner Best Community Leader Tony Lewis, Jr. with the 2011 DMV Reel Community Award. Johnson’s mission is to provide an event which strives to present and recognize the best of truly independent films in a variety of categories from around the world in addition to producing a fabulous extravaganza.

 

Following the 2011 RIFE Awards Finale the ‘Sons of Life’ featuring Tony Lewis, Jr. and ‘Mayor for Life’ featuring Marion Barry will conclude the weekend of screenings as the Closing Films on Sunday, October 23 at 8:00pm. ‘Sons of Life’ is an urban documentary featuring Community Activist Tony Lewis, Jr., who was recently awarded with Steve Harvey’s Best Community Leader Hoodie Award and won a brand new Ford Explorer. Tony’s mission is to assist children with incarcerated parents in another direction as Tony is the son of Tony Lewis, alleged right hand man of drug king pin Rayful Edmonds who is now serving life in prison. ‘Mayor for Life’ is a reality drama series which grants the audience access into the life of former DC Mayor Marion Barry and his current efforts and struggles as Ward 8 Councilmember.

 

The event is accessible by metro and located at the Southern Ave metro stop; there will be a shuttle transporting attendees to THEARC Theater from the metro. There is also plenty of parking at THEARC Theater.
