Today,Gabriel-Bisset Smith, a writer/director who is rapidly emerging as a rising star of the UK film scene, premiered his new short film, “Smoke” on Vimeo.
SMOKE from Gabriel Bisset-Smith on Vimeo.
The film was the winner of the Circalit Screenwriting Competition hosted by Bisset-Smith in July 2011, and was written by first-time writer Stuart Curran.
The film tells the story of a romance between two women (Jodie Whittaker and Claire Browne), and is arranged so that the narrative tells the story of them first meeting whilst the visuals tell the story of them breaking up in reverse.
Bisset-Smith is best known as the winner of the Tenderpixel Audience Award at Rushes Soho Shorts, the Vimeo Best Narrative Award and the Grand Jury Prize at the Disposable Film Festival in 2010. He was also nominated for the 2011 Off West End Most Promising Playwright award, was a writer on Channel 4′s ‘Skins and has a successful comedy act called Guilt & Shame. He currently has a feature film in development with Shine Pictures, and has been invited to judge the Vimeo Festival this year with American actor and filmmaker, James Franco.
Bisset-Smith commented, “When I first read this script I knew it was something special. It’s a simple idea that’s easy to shoot but with a really neat twist. Basically it’s exactly what you want from a short film script.”
Jodie Whittaker commented, “I’m always excited to be involved in projects that support up and coming writers like Stuart Curran and having been directed by Gabriel before I knew it would be a really interesting and well executed film. I think its a fantastic showcase of new writing and film making talent in the UK today.”
The screenwriting competition was hosted on the crowd-sourcing platform for writers, Circalit, which enables writers to showcase their projects, connect with industry professionals, and build up a following online.
Raoul Tawadey, CEO of Circalit, commented, “This competition proves that crowd-sourcing is a great way to find undiscovered talent. There are many more scripts on Circalit that deserve to be produced. We’re going to be continuing our “Get Your Film Made” series this year, and our next film will be going into production with Manchester comedy director, Jason Wingard, very soon.”
Writer, Stuart Curran, commented, “Working with Gabriel was a fantastic opportunity, and the level of detail and expertise that he brought to turning the script into a reality was astounding. I’m incredibly grateful to Circalit for running their screenwriting competition and giving me the chance to get my film into production.”
