Known to many as the Godmother of Performance Art, for nearly four decades Marina Abramović has been challenging, confronting and shocking the art world with her fearless and completely unique performance art. Now for the first time a feature-length documentary Marina Abramović The Artist is Present will follow the artist as she prepares for her landmark retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Out in UK cinemas on 6 July 2012 courtesy of Dogwoof, Marina Abramović The Artist is Present is a rare insight to the artist preparing for arguably the most important moment of her life. It’s also a film that explores her roots, her childhood, her parents, her early work collaborations and the controversy that has always surrounded her work. Not to be missed, Marina Abramović The Artist is Present is a portrait of a rare individual who has never drawn distinction between art and life.

Synopsis

Seductive, fearless, and outrageous, Marina Abramović has been redefining what art is for nearly 40 years. Using her own body as a vehicle, pushing herself beyond her limits – and at times risking her life in the process – she creates performances that challenge, shock, and move us. MARINA ABRAMOVIĆ THE ARTIST IS PRESENT follows the artist as she prepares for what may be the most important moment of her life: a major new retrospective of her work, taking place at The Museum of Modern Art. To be given a retrospective at one of the world’s premier museums is the most exhilarating sort of milestone. For Marina, it is far more: it is the chance to finally silence the question she has been hearing over and over again for four decades: “But why is this art?”
