Black Mass: Behind-the-scenes Look at Johnny Depp’s Transformation

Johnny Depp as James 'Whitey' Bulger in BLACK MASS

Will Black Mass be the film that finally wins Johnny Depp the Best Actor Oscar?

With three nominations under his belt – a surprising nod in 2003 for his turn as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, and again the following year for playing Peter Pan creator J.M. Barrie in 2004’s Finding Neverland. His last nomination came in 2007 for his role as the murderous, singing barber, Sweeney Todd, in Tim Burton’s big screen adaptation of the popular stage musical – Depp has yet to take home the statuette.

Now, after more than a few under-performing movies and a series of scandals in his private life, the word is that Depp’s portrayal of Boston’s most notorious gangster could be the one that turns it around and sees Depp named Best Actor in a Leading Role at next year’s Academy Awards.

Set in the 1970s, Irish mobster Jimmy ‘Whitey’ Bulger (Depp) is persuaded by FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) to collaborate with the FBI in order to eliminate their common enemy: the Italian mob.  This is the true story of an unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement and become all-powerful, one of the most ruthless and dangerous gangsters in U.S. history.

From quirky, chisel cheek-boned character actor to hollow-eyed, gravel-voiced crimelord, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at Johnny Depp’s transformation, including interviews with Johnny’s co-stars including Benedict Cumberbatch and Joel Edgerton, and director Scott Cooper
