Nicholas Hoult says superhero movies don’t try hard enough

Starring in one of the most successful superhero movie franchises hasn’t stopped Nicholas Hoult from  commenting on the state of the genre as a whole. Appearing as the blue-furred Beast in Fox’s X-Men series has given the actor with an appreciation for getting the job done right, as he tells NME . And he’s a bit annoyed by some of the other films in the space.

“At times I’ll see superhero movies and admittedly be frustrated by them,” he said. “It does feel like some are just packaging and they’re not trying hard enough because they know it’s a bankable formula.”

“I love the X-Men films because they have a heart to them and you have actors like Michael Fassbender who brings so much to the characters,” he added. “The superheroes in that world aren’t smug. You don’t want to watch someone who you know is going to win from the start just being awesome for two hours.”

Part of what has established the superhero movies as box office mainstays  is its ability to repeat a formula successfully: the adaptation of comic books. For the most part – or, I should say, for the most blockbuster success stories – these films revolve around the heroes winning and the villains losing. Of course, with the ambiguous alliance of Fassbender’s Magneto, who seems to change his tune along with his shorts, that happy ending isn’t always so certain.
