THE NEW SOCIAL is an independent London-based collective which, through film screenings, talks and special projects, takes a sweeping look across Russia and former Soviet and Socialist republics to uncover how new social, political and cultural identities are being played out on film in the post-socialist era. The latest screening as part of THE NEW SOCIAL’s NEW EAST CINEMA progamme organised in collaboration with the Barbican and Calvert 22 is Michał Marczak’s ALL THESE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS.
Sitting somewhere between fiction, documentary and ‘constructed reality’, filmmaker Michal Marczak’s ALL THESE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS is an ode to the vibrancy of modern-day Warsaw, a city in a state of flux suspended between its traumatic past and a future powered by a new generation bursting with energy.
ALL THESE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS chronicles several months in the lives of art school friends Kris and Michal, who together resolve to experience life to the limit. Marczak follows the two young men as they roam the city at night, floating from party to party, encounter to encounter, romance and heartbreak, all the way accompanied by pulsing DJ beats. As they chain-smoke, drink, and dance with abandon in city squares and makeshift clubs, the film effortlessly captures the energy, freedom and nonchalance – even if fleeting – of youth.
NEW EAST CINEMA is a film series presented in collaboration with the Barbican and Calvert 22 Foundation, curated by THE NEW SOCIAL: a cultural collective bringing contemporary cinema from Eastern Europe and beyond to London.
