Future World, co-directed by James Franco: first trailer
For a brief time in the 80s and 90s, video rental shelves were lined with low-budget clones of George Miller’s Mad Max movies, whether they were tawdry-yet-fun efforts from Spain and Italy or slightly more slick offerings from the US – see for example Steel Dawn, starring Patrick Swayze, or Rutger Hauer‘s Salute Of The Jugger.
Decades later, though, and it seems that Mad Max: Fury Road has spawned another imitator – this one starring and co-directed by James Franco. Future World is set in a decidedly familiar post-apocalyptic landscape of scavengers, tattered leather jackets batered vehicles. There’s a story about a hero trying to save his dying mother, but we suspect this takes a back seat to the plot, which involves lots of punch-ups and dangerous driving.
As well as Franco, you’ll find Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Snoop Dog and Jeffrey Wahlberg among the starry cast. Which is all the more surprising, because Future World looks remarkably like something that would’ve gone straight-to-DVD not so long ago. It’s certainly a departure for Franco, who previously found acclaim with The Disaster Artist, and before that made something of a cottage industry of adapting novels by William Faulkner. Maybe Franco just really fancied trying his hand at a sci-fi action movie.
Future World is due out this spring. Until then, feast your eyes on the trailer…
