This belongs to what could be called the British school of Miserablism, which tends to feature a downbeat story
This story has certain elements in common with “The Full Monty”, in that it deals with a group of largely middle aged men facing crisis, who bond together and find themselves through taking off their clothes
With actors and filmmakers in conversation including: Leslie Manville, Maxine Peake, Vicky McClure, Asif Kapadia, Johnny Harris, Daniel Mays, Naomi Ackie, Cathy Tyson
The film is adapted from the novel “Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem” (also published as “The Trial of Elizabeth Cree”) by London’s biographer Peter Ackroyd. Like Ackroyd’s book, it is a fictional murder mystery built around the historically factual and unsolved crimes of a Victorian serial killer in the East End of London, who was known as the Limehouse Golem.
