Big Screen Ceremony: 20 May 2006

Film critic and broadcaster Mark Kermode ill be judging the festival again this year

WHAT IS THE BIG SCREEN?
The BBC Hampshire and BBC Dorset websites have teamed up to bring you the 2005 Big Screen film festival - our annual online celebration of local film-making talent. The festival held in partnership with the local filmmaking charity City Eye and Harbour Lights Picturehouse, is a fantastic opportunity to get your film available to a world-wide audience and get some feedback on your film-making skills.
BBC Hampshire is now accepting entries for its fourth festival and would like film-makers from the Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Dorset areas to send in their films to be shown on the BBC Hampshire and BBC Dorset websites.

There are four categories to enter your film in. Choose from either Drama, Animation, Comedy or Arts and Factual. You can be an enthusiastic amateur, an aspiring new professional or a student film-maker. Last year's winners included students from Southampton Institute and the Arts Institute, Bournemouth as well as talented self-taught amateurs.

Not only that but film critic and broadcaster Mark Kermode will be our festival judge again this year and will pick his favourites from a shortlist of entries chosen by BBC Big Screen organisers. A special screening ceremony will take place at Harbour Lights Picturehouse in Southampton in May where Mark will present the winners with certificates before their film is shown on the big screen.

20TH LONDON LESBIAN & GAY FILM FESTIVAL
Wednesday 29 March - Wednesday 12 April 2006

INFORMATION

The London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival (LLGFF), now approaching its 20th year, is currently the third largest film festival in the UK, after the London and Edinburgh Film Festivals.

The LLGFF is one of the most prolific and longest-running of a network of more than 100 international lesbian and gay film festivals. Both nationally and internationally, the festival has a reputation for doing more than simply representing the best of new queer cinema; it ensures that audiences are given the opportunity to appreciate new work in a historical context with retrospective programming. In addition to the film and video programme, it also presents a range of events.

2005's programme was particularly strong, and included many high profile titles such as the film adaptation of JT Leroy's best-selling cult novel, The Heart is Deceitful...Above All Things; the box office success of the festival, Dorian Blues, and the Spanish sleeper hit Bear Cub as well as many other critically-acclaimed features from around the world. We were proud to present some very strong documentary titles including the road doco, Drag Kings on Tour; the heart-rending story of a newborn baby's fight for survival in Little Man; and the inspiring Sister Jeannine Gramick's Journey of Faith, in which a lone nun takes on the Catholic Church in her fight against homophobia. The short films selections, ranging from the acclaimed trans strand Fuck Gender to the Experimentelle and Family Affairs programmes, demonstrated a wealth of film-making talent. We were delighted to welcome many eminent guests to the festival, including Lori Petty, the star of our hugely-successful opening night film, Prey For Rock & Roll, the outrageous comic duo Kiki and Herb; JT Leroy and Asia Argento from The Heart is Deceitful; and novelist Scott Heim - author of our riveting closing night film Mysterious Skin. Some of our new Patrons were on hand to lend their support to LLGFF 2005: as well as Paul Gambaccini and Pratibha Parmar, Patricia Rozema (Mansfield Park, I've Heard The Mermaids Singing) travelled all the way from Canada to introduce several of the archive titles (Orlando and Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit); and Stephen Fry hosted a mass wedding reception after the UK documentary, Andrew and Jeremy Get Married. There was a variety of events during the festival including a workshop on How to Make Lesbian Porn; a cross-dressing singalong event to accompany the screening of Bride & Prejudice; and activist Peter Tatchell chairing a panel discussion on Ragga and homophobia. We were also honoured to host the world premieres of two very different new films - the intriguing and revealing Is It Really So Strange? from director William E Jones, exploring the cult of Morrissey among die-hard Latino and Hispanic fans in Los Angeles , and first-time director Russell Brown's witty Race You to the Bottom. Both William and Russell were in London for their films along with Race You to the Bottom star Cole Williams. Directing duo Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau (Drôle de Félix, Ma Vie) delighted everyone as they presented this year's wonderful surprise film Cockles and Muscles (Crustaces et Coquillages). The festival continued to cater for an ever-widening range of cinematic taste and passions including new art and cultural events such as our first-ever collaboration with Tate Modern which featured a retrospective of William E Jones' work and a screening of Gregg Bordowitz's powerful 1993 documentary Fast Trip, Long Drop.

The Festival screens over a two-week period in London . Opening and Closing nights traditionally take place at West End sites; the main Festival site and the administrative home of the festival is the National Film Theatre, which in autumn 2003 celebrated its 50th year as one of the world's premiere cinematheques.

The LLGFF attracts an audience in excess of 25,000 for a programme of over 150 titles. The Festival programme is currently divided into sections: Galas, Centrepiece Films, European Cinema, World Cinema, Shorts Showcase, Retrospectives, Special Focus, Events. It also attracts a wide range of international delegates; in 2005 this included 146 Industry delegates (distributors, sales agents and programmers from all over the world); 122 film-makers who attended the Festival in order to present their work; 50 international press delegates.

Following screenings in London , a highlights programme from the Festival embarks on the nation's biggest touring programme. In 2005 the LLGFF enjoyed a very successful tour, screening at 40 venues for 5 months directly after the main festival in London , with 8 features and 12 shorts achieving high audience figures. The Tour also played at Soho ( London ), Dublin , Manchester and Chichester film festivals.

The Festival is organised by the British Film Institute, the national agency with responsibility for encouraging the arts of film and television and conserving them in the national interest. The Festival is co-ordinated by a staff team who also have responsibility for the London Film Festival, and is programmed by a team of freelance programmers.

URE Movies Set to Launch

URE movies, an online film channel, is set to launch in March providing an opportunity for filmmakers to showcase their work to a wide audience. URE movies will stream short films 24 hours a day on the internet with an aim of creating a global community of film lovers who can access a wide range of innovative films or promote their own work to like minded individuals.

URE movies is currently looking for material to broadcast, films of any length or genre, made by professionals, amateurs or first timers. All the creators ask for is a sense of originality and spark.

Organisations such as URE movies are paving the way for a new form of distribution on a global scale. Aspiring filmmakers in the UK have to push their short films at international festivals (if they’re accepted) and follow the well-trodden path taken by their predecessors. It is hoped that the accessibility of the World Wide Web will allow the work of filmmakers to be seen by an audience of millions across the globe, promoting the talents of directors, producers and actors alike.

To submit your film to URE movies send your material (preferably on DVD format) to:
