Golden Globe Awards 2005 Oscar buzz is now well under way following last week's Golden Globe Awards. Two films dominated proceedings: Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby (winning Best Director for Clint and Best Actress in a Comedy or Drama for his leading lady Hilary Swank) and The Aviator, Martin Scorcese's latest offering, which won Best Picture and Best Actor for Mr. Decaprio. Jamie Foxx won the Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his standout performance in Ray, Taylor Hackford's biopic of the legendary Ray Charles. Bookies are now placing him favourite to win the Oscar, which would topple The Aviator's total a little. The other breakout winner of the night was the independent film Sideways, which won for Best Screenplay, while Mike Nicholls' adaptation of the Patrick Marber play Closer, which has received mixed reactions, also scooped two supporting actor awards for Natalie Portman and Clive Owen.
It now looks like a showdown between Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorsese is on the horizon come 27th February, but with an Oscar-less career spanning over thirty years, some are saying that it would be a shame for Scorcese to win for this film, if at all.
