Former Corrie actress to open short film premiere
Two short films produced by emerging regional film makers will be premiered this week as part of a competition to discover new industry talent.
The Global Stories project, which was launched earlier this year, sought interest from writers, directors, producers, camera operators, sound recordists, editors and production co-ordinators from under-represented groups across Yorkshire and the Humber. Two production teams of seven were formed with each having to produce a short film in just eight days.
The two films, entitled It's My Party and The Long Walk, will be screened at the National Media Museum, Bradford, at 6pm on Thursday 7 June 2007, in a premiere which will be opened by Shobna Gulati, best known for playing the role of Sunita Alahan in award-winning soap Coronation Street.
Global Stories is an Equal * and Screen Yorkshire** supported scheme, run in partnership with the University of Bradford for new and emerging talent from groups currently under-represented in the film, broadcast and digital media industries in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
During production, the budding film makers received on the job training from film industry professionals and experts from the University of Bradford's School of Informatics, and were able to take advantage of the industry-standard equipment housed within the University to make their films.
Ali Rashid, Director of Innovation and Enterprise in the University of Bradford's School of Informatics, who also runs the successful television company Real Life, said: "It's been an adventure and a fantastic opportunity for the film makers. They will now each have a calling card when looking for other opportunities.
"For many it's the first time they've worked with professionals from the industry and I'm sure the experience will inspire them to go on and earn a place on bigger projects".
Sally Joynson, Chief Executive at Screen Yorkshire, said: "Yorkshire's diverse communities have a wealth of stories to be told and in today's networked world stories can go global.
"Global Stories has given opportunities to those with no previous experience a real chance to tell their stories and get a foot on the ladder of a career in filmmaking. I'd like to congratulate all those who took part on their very successful projects."
Global Stories
The Global Stories project was managed by the University of Bradford on behalf of Equal and Screen Yorkshire, with support from Yorkshire Forward. It was specifically aimed at people living in the Yorkshire and Humber region. Filming took place in Bradford between 26 May and 2 June 2007.
The 14 participants received a training allowance and those from outside Bradford were offered accommodation for the duration of the project. The two films are up to five minutes in length.
Short film synopses
1. It's My Party
Two party people staggering home at dawn want to prolong their fun. So, when they spot a woman dancing in the dark they're keen to walk through the front door. Once inside the house, faced with decaying spam sandwiches, things don't exactly go to plan.
2. Long Walk
Has Tareq's luck in love finally run out? Or against all the odds, will his charms succeed in attracting his ultimate love, Elettra.
Tareq wants to propose to Elettra, but she's not sure if he's the kind of guy she wants to commit to. During an event filled day in the park, a series of well timed interruptions prevent our hero from attempts to propose to his sweetheart. Obstructions include a friendly hoody, a clumsy skateboarder, a mugger and a crisp munching kid who all have something top say about Tareq's quest for his true love.
Will Tareq get the chance to overcome his fears and propose to Elettra and will she accept his uninhibited attempts to get a ring on her finger.
* Equal
Equal is an initiative funded through the European Social Fund (ESF). The programme tests and promotes new means of combating all forms of discrimination and inequalities in the labour market, both for those in work and for those seeking work.
