Actor Heath Ledger Dead at 28
Actor Heath Ledger has been found dead at an apartment in Manhattan.
He was discovered by a massuese, who had an appointment with the 28-year-old star, earlier this afternoon (22nd January). Having been let in by a housekeeper, she received no answer when knocking on Ledger's bedroom door. On entering, she found him unconscious on the bed and, after efforts to revive him failed, called the police.
Perth-born Ledger first came to prominence as the young romantic lead in the teen comedy 10 Things I hate About You (1999). This was followed by A Knight's Tale in 2001 and Casanova and The Brothers Grimm, both in 2005. However, it was his role as the young gay cowboy, playing opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain (2005) that brought him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
He is due to be seen on our screens this summer as The Joker in the new Batman film, The Dark Knight.
Police said that the death was not being treated as suspicious. With sleeping pills found in the room, the evidence suggests suicide or accidental overdose.
Ledger leaves a two-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose, his child with his Brokeback Mountain co-star, Michelle Williams. The couple had separated last year.
