Winners of the 64th Annual Golden Globes Awards 2007

It was a good night for Britain last night at the 64th Annual Golden Globes Awards

It was a good night for Britain last night at the 64th Annual Golden Globes Awards which took place in Beverly Hills, California, with Helen Mirren reigning supreme, picking up the top acting honours in both the big and small screen, and for portraying two of Britain's greatest monarchs - Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen (Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture), and Elizabeth I, the TV mini-series for which she also received a Best Actress award. The Queen also won Best Screenplay whilst another British Actor, Jeremy Irons, won Best Supporting Actor for Elizabeth I, which was also named best Miniseries or TV Movie.

Other British winners included Sacha Cohen who was named Best Film Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Borat. For TV, Hugh Laurie's role in House won him Best Actor in a Drama, and Bill Nighy and Emily Blunt both scored a hit with Gideon's Daughter, being named Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress in a Mini-series or Movie.

While Babel was named Best Drama Picture, is Martin Scorsese's Best Director win for The Departed an indication that his long Oscar drought might soon be quenched? There was a first time win as Best Supporting Actor for Eddie Murphy, coming in from the cold to regain his Hollywood crown in Dreamgirls. The film, which stars Beyonce Knowles and is loosely based around the Diana Ross and the Supremes story, also won in the Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture Category.

There was also a return to form for Alec Baldwin, who picked up Best Actor in a TV Musical or Comedy for 30 Rock, but top acting honours went to Forest Whitaker who was named Best Film Actor in a Drama for his tour de force turn as Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.

It's new to our shores, but the surprise hit Ugly Betty was named Best TV Comedy, with it's star, America Ferrera, winning Best Actress in a TV Comedy or Musical. Grey's Anatomy won Best TV Drama.

Other winners included Meryl Streep as Best Film Actress in a Musical or Comedy, for her 'boss from hell' turn in The Devil Wears Prada, whilst Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima was named Best Foreign Language Film. Cars picked up Best Animated.

Warren Beatty was named as this year's recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
