Close-Up Film Viewers Top 10 Rom-Com film poll -
1. Bridget Jones's Diary 6. Sleepless in Seattle
2. When Harry Met Sally 7. Pretty Woman
3. Four Weddings and a Funeral 8. Ghost
4. Notting Hill 9. There's Something About Mary
5. Love Actually 10. 50 First Dates
When it comes to rom-coms, Richard Curtis is the undisputed king, with you putting no less than four of his oh-so-British comedies into the top five, and giving an appearance for Hugh Grant in four of the top five too. Julia Roberts and Meg Ryan both make two appearances, with Roberts early career-defining performance as call girl Vivian in Pretty Woman clearly still holding a place in your hearts, while ditsy Meg Ryan gave us one of the most memorable scenes restaurant scenes ever in When Harry met Sally. Ditsy women are a real favourite, with Cameron Diaz being Ben Stiller’s warm-hearted love interest in There’s Something about Mary, and the screen coupling of Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler, hot on the heels of The Wedding Singer, proved a big crowd puller with 50 First Dates. Finally, good old-fashioned schmaltz never dies, and neither does love in the classic Ghost.
Those which didn’t make the top ten but which we think deserve an honourable mention include: Jerry Maguire, Groundhog Day, What’s Up Doc?, Pillow Talk, Clueless, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Arthur, and Shakespeare in Love
