One
day, an 18-year-old beanpole accosted me holding a dv camera,
babbling: "will you say something for Kourtrajmé?". "Kour...
What?" I willingly obeyed the playful tone of my interlocutor,
and said... Well, I don't exactly remember what, but I obeyed.
Some months later I received a CD-ROM
tagged Kourtrajmé,
banged it into my Mac and discovered a succession of delirious
images, without any clear or precise meaning, but into which
had been edited the fruits of our first meeting.
Right away I saw in it, not only a certain poetry, but an
intriguing form and a powerful sense of rhythm. As soon as
I could, I tried to hook up this great young director with
a rap video gig... which unfortunately fell through.
"No big deal." was the young Kim Chapiron's (A.K.A
the Chinese member of Kourtrajmé) response. "If
you're up for it, we can at least make a short." "When?" I
replied. "I'm a very busy professional actor and I'm
in the middle of shooting READ MY LIPS." "Sunday,
if you like!" "Ok, but only between 14:30 & 18:00." "No
problem!"
And here I am shooting a short with this bunch with whom
I abandon all my preconceptions about cinema, since anyway,
for them, even the shot/reaction shot no longer exists. And
on top, while I thought I was making one short, amidst the
confusion I ended up having made three. And there, already
a cult legend, the Wanted Brothers trilogy was born.
Every producer I've worked with in
Paris will tell you. I tried to bring them one or two directors
from the Kourtrajmé collective,
claiming them as the true offspring of LA HAINE and DOBERMANN.
"Nothing doing, too young, too crazy, this isn't cinema,
not enough this or too much that." Only one of them
flashed right away: the producer of DOBERMANN, Éric
Névé of La Chauve-souris, who told me, "If
one day you want to produce them, I'll be right behind you..." Only
a short time later, Kim Chapiron told me he had an idea for
a strange movie, sexy but terrifying. That was all I needed,
and I decided to produce this film through my company 120
Films in association with
La Chauve-souris...
