LATEST LEEDS FILM QUARTER SEASON: APRIL-JUNE 2006

The latest Leeds Film Quarter season encompasses a varied selection of film seasons that will keep even the most enthusiastic of cineastes satisfied over the coming months.

A focus on two of the great filmmakers – Jean Renoir and Krzysztof Kieslowski – will give everyone the opportunity to see some of the most remarkable films in cinema history on the big screen. With classics such as The Double Life Of Veronique and Le Regle De Jeu amongst the greats on offer, this is an opportunity to discover (or re-discover) some of the most amazing stories ever committed to celluloid.

Fuse will excitingly demonstrate the significant relationship that there exists between film and music with such movies as Koyaanisqatsi, with a score by Phillip Glass, and You’re Gonna Miss Me: Roky Erickson, a film about the iconic singer of the legendary psychedelic pioneers Thirteenth Floor Elevators who disappeared from public view after a stint in an archaic Texan mental institution for possession of
drugs.

Refugee Week allows us to once again prove the power of movies as a social tool, with The Boy who Plays on the Buddhas of Bamiyan, an astonishingly beautiful documentary telling the story of Mir, a young boy whose playground consists of the once breathtaking Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan. Also look out for The Art of Flight, a daring documentary filmed illegally on the streets of Cairo.

Escaping from the Leeds International Film Festival, Fanomenon wends its fearsome way to LFQ to provide a plethora of terrifying late night double bills of classic and new horror movies. Included is a special preview of Wild Country, a werewolf movie that’s an intriguing blend of horror and social realism, and The Keep, a rare chance to see Michael Mann’s terrifying psychological horror. A

As always, the LFQ Specials provide an enticing assortment of intriguing segments of celluloid. You can rock out to the special preview of Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey or Ten Skies, an acute observation of landscape by veteran filmmaker James Benning.

The full screening dates, venues and times are attached to this email. Please note that screening dates are different than previous LFQ Seasons. More information on the programme is available at www.leedsfilm.com, and a brochure should be with you in the next week or so.

All tickets are available from Leeds City Centre Box Office (0113 2243801) or online except for films in the Fuse season which are available from the West Yorkshire Playhouse (0113 213 7700) or at www.fuseleeds.org.uk.
