Hidden away amongst the Western Isles of
Scotland is the remote island of Scarp, where a handful of
people live a quiet existence. Tucked away from a world of
political unrest in the 1930s the last thing the islanders
want, or expect even, is a visit from a German rocket scientist.
Director Stephen Whittaker’s
latest feature The Rocket Post is the charming true story
of Gerhard Zucher who tried to revolutionise the Western
Isles postal service by sending mail in a rocket between
the isles. This simple but touching story is beautifully
shot on location in Taransay (doubling for the neighbouring
Isle of Scarp) and truly embraces the desolate and breathtaking
scenery of the Outer Hebrides.
James MacInnes and William Morrissey’s wonderfully
written script explores the relationship between the proud,
ambitious German scientist and a community not used to change.
Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen (‘Kingdom of Heaven’,
TV’s ‘The Virgin Queen’) portrays the determined
Frau Zucher and Shauna MacDonald (‘The Descent’,
TV’s ‘Spooks’,) plays Catherine McKay,
the kind and beautiful young woman who looks after the scientist
and his associate while they are on the island.
The Rocket Post is an evocative and
beautiful film that lingers in the memory long after the
end credits roll. After being screened at the Stony Brook
Film Festival, one reviewer commented that it is "a
wonderfully thoughtful and involving movie that leaves
an imprint well beyond its initial lift-off."
