Review by Michelle Moore
Set in the City of Angels , Spread tells the story of Nikki (Kutcher), who is homeless and jobless, making his way through life preying on wealthy women in bars, restaurants and parties, spending the night with them, then sponging off them until they either see sense or he gets bored. They best way to describe Nikki, is as a hustler, he is a good looking, charming man who knows all the right things to say to make a woman feel special.
However he gets his comeuppance when Samantha (Heche), the woman he is currently bedding kicks him out. His best friend Harry (Stan) wants nothing more to do with him, his bed buddy Emily (Blachard) who actually did like him once is sick and tired of all his lies and games, plus Heather (Levieva), the girl he has had his eye on, is actually looking at him in the very same way he has looked at hundreds of women before.
The great thing about this film is it doesn't have the typical ‘happily ever after' ending. Nikki doesn't make up with the girl of his dreams as she moves onto someone richer. He finally gives his heart to another only to have it rejected in much the same way he has done to countless women in the past. It may seem quite sad, but it is a positive thing for Nikki as he is forced to look at his life and future and is given the direction he needs to sort himself out, getting a job, earning a living and living a life to be proud of.
Be warned there is an overabundance of sexual content, but with a title such as Spread it kind of gives the plot away. It may be quite impulsive and repetitive at first, but is done in a tasteful and discreet manner for all those involved, mainly Kutcher as a bed hopping and very convincing hustler who has the looks and charisma to persuade women into doing anything.
The extras on this disc include interesting interviews with the four main cast members, where they discuss their characters, the on screen relationships and their thoughts behind the plot.
