The film is based on a Vanity Fair article written by Marie Brenner. It has very recently been proved that Marie Colvin’s death in Homs, Syria in 2012 was no accident, but deliberately targeted.
A word first about the technology of this live action movie, which enables the real dogs of the title to appear to talk. It is very clever but it doesn’t look right on a dog’s face, going against the essence of what makes a dog – well – a dog!
The news story that earned The Boston Globe the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2003 is dramatised by some of Hollywood’s best in this film which was Academy Award-winning for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
The subject sounds distasteful but the film is actually a true and well-made account of the sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests in Boston, brought to light in 2002 by a remarkable team of investigators working for ‘Spotlight’ at the Boston Globe. The disclosure didn’t just shock Boston but had a wider impact on the whole of America and indeed on the rest of the world.
