Supernatural Season 10 (15) | Home Ents Review

When U.S. television show Supernatural began back in 2005, each episode was more of a battle against the demon of the week rather than consisting of any ongoing narrative. There was a back history explaining the reasons for these brothers to be fighting against the forces of darkness: their mother was killed by a yellow-eyed demon back when the boys were young. This event kicked off a series of actions that resulted in their father becoming a Hunter and dragging the boys along for the ride.

Within these first few seasons, Sam (Padalecki) and Dean (Ackles) Winchester go hunting various supernatural beings: a wendigo, a djinn, shapeshifters, vampires, ghosts and demons as well as some popular Urban Legends such as Bloody Mary and the Hook Man. As the seasons continued, as well as hunting various creatures of the night on a weekly basis, there was an ongoing fight against some darkness of hell or an apocalypse, whether it was crossroad demons and hellhounds, Lucifer, the Leviathan or even the so called good guys, Angels.

Season ten starts six weeks after the events of the previous season with a now demonic Dean hanging out with his new pal Crowley (Sheppard) and living the life of no regret. That is until Sam and the Angel Castiel (Collins) complete a ritual that brings Dean back, however still retaining the Mark of Cain. The events that come next are less focused on the brother’s daily fight with evil, although they do have runs in with vampires at a sheriff’s retreat and Hansel and Gretel, and more on containing the violent and demonic nature inside Dean and finding a way to remove the Mark of Cain.

Castiel has his own battle in this season, dealing with the daughter of his vessel. This proves to be quite a challenge due to his lack of humanity and emotion as he is an Angel rather than being a human. The introduction of a Witch called Rowena (Connell) also causes a stir, but more so with Crowley than the Winchesters. When Dean gives up all hope on ever finding a solution to his “curse”, it is up to his brother and their friends to resort to any means necessary to pull Dean back from the brink of Death, quite literally.

This could be the most jaw-dropping season of Supernatural to date as it keeps a viewer on the edge of their seat from beginning to end. For individuals that have been with the brothers since the opening credits of season one, it is heart-breaking to see Dean’s demonic nature causing more anguish between him and his brother than ever before. Nothing these two have ever been through has caused so much sadness and anger that they are fighting to keep themselves together. As the season concludes and a light may just have been shone on the brother’s good fortune, it is quickly snapped away as The Darkness, an ancient evil that roamed the earth before man, makes waves towards the Impala.

With ten seasons already behind them and an eleventh currently airing in the US, creators of Supernatural are certainly doing something right and this reviewer for one cannot wait to see what Season Eleven holds instore for Sam and Dean Winchester.
